Example of a Special Course for Foreign Students Offered by a Private University
【Takushoku University Intensive Japanese Language Program for Overseas Students】

Takushoku University was established in 1900 to develop internationally minded graduates and citizens. It has welcomed foreign students and been active in various exchange efforts from the beginning. 

This Japanese-language program was created in 1972 to provide foreign students desiring to study at Japanese universities with the tools enabling them to do so, primarily the Japanese language.

Eligibility:

Successfully completed 12 years of elementary, secondary and upper-secondary (high school) education, or the equivalent, and either of the following:
(1) Passed Level 3 or higher of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test; or
(2) Have studied Japanese for at least 300 hours.


School fees:

Admission: ¥125,000
Tuition: ¥475,000
Seminars: ¥30,000
Total: ¥630,000

Curriculum:

Compulsory subjects: Japanese language, Japanese Studies, and English

Optional subjects:

Students desiring an academic career in the humanities: mathematics for the humanities; geography; history; modern society

Students desiring an academic career in the sciences: mathematics for the sciences; biology; physics; chemistry

* Lessons are 90 minutes


Class organization:

All lessons are in classes of about 15 students. Students are divided into nine classes based on Japanese proficiency as shown in a placement test.


Further education:

In addition to entering Takushoku University, graduates of the program have gone on to national and private universities at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.


Recommendation or transfer to Takushoku University:

Foreign students in the program who meet the criteria can earn recommendations to undergraduate departments in Takushoku University.
Based on academic records, credits earned, etc., in a student's home country, he or she may also be eligible to take the examination for transfer to Takushoku University at the third-year level.


Scholarships:

The university offers the "Takushoku University IJLP (Intensive Japanese Language Program)Scholarship" and the "IJLP EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission for InternationalStudents) Scholarship." Other possible scholarships include the "Honors Scholarship" given by the Japan Student Services Organization, and other private scholarships.


Residence for foreign students:

Foreign students may reside in the Takushoku University Foreign Students Dormitory Residence for foreign students. Since the number of rooms is limited and a selection process is implemented, all students desiring to do so cannot be accommodated.


Overseas representative offices:

The university has representative offices in Taipei, Taiwan; Seoul, South Korea; and Jakarta, Indonesia, to consult and handle inquiries on studying in Japan. Applications are also accepted and entrance examinations are administered locally.
