Q. How do I change my status of residence if I am hired by a Japanese company to work in Japan?
A. If you are scheduled to begin work in April, the application to change your status of residence for the purpose of employment will most likely be accepted by the immigration bureau from around February. Permission is never granted on the spot. In most cases, your application will be stamped with "in process," so if you would like to go back to your own country temporarily before you begin your job, make sure that you time your application correctly.

Q. Can a foreign student participate in an internship program?
A. There are an increasing number of students who participate in a corporate internship program in order to gain experience. An internship generally refers to a program whereby students undergo training at businesses and other organizations. If you participate in such a program while a student but will be receiving monetary compensation for the work, you must first get a permit to perform activities outside your status of residence; in other words, you must take the same steps as when engaging in part-time work.
Please inquire at your school regarding student internship programs.
If you would like to undergo company training for a specified period after graduation, you must first consult with your academic advisor, find a company related to your chosen field that will accept you as a trainee, change your status of residence from that of College Student to a residency status that allows you to work in Japan.
